Who is Raziah Mahmud Geneid?
Raziah Mahmud Geneid has been a prominent figure in the Malaysian construction industry for more than thirty years. Born in the town of Miri, which is located in the northern province of Sarawak, she has lived in or around the region for most of her life. Her long established links with this part of Malaysia see her also take an active role in promoting Sarawak to people she meets both at home and abroad. Formerly Raziah Mahmud, she is a mother to seven children and is married to Robert Genied, an Australian businessman and entrepreneur.
A Senior Figure in the Malaysian Construction Industry
Raziah Mahmud Geneid holds several high profile positions for a number of different companies involved in the construction and property development in Malaysia. Her work for Kumpulan Parabena Sdn. Bhd., where she has been the managing director since 1982, has resulted in her overseeing a number of important construction projects in the region of Sarawak. Most notably this included the creation of a large scale housing development that provides affordable accommodation for more than 30,000 people in the townships of Taman Jelita and Taman Tunku. The company is also involved in several ongoing projects which include the creation of 1,000 housing units in Bintulu and the construction of wastewater treatment works in Kuching city centre.
In addition, Raziah also leads the board of Kumpulan Construction Sdn. Bhd. In her role as chairwoman, she advises the chief executive on a number of issues regarding business planning and strategy and also works closely with both non-exec and executive directors of the board.
Promoting Sustainability and Eco-Tourism
Outside of working in the construction industry, Raziah Mahmud Geneid also has experience in the hotel and tourism industry. In 1989 she was appointed executive chairperson of Majupun Sdn. Bhd., a position which she still holds today. During her tenure, Raziah successfully arranged for Marriot International to take over management of the Rihga Royal Hotel in Miri, which later became Miri Marriot Resort and Spa. Heavily involved in the all aspects of the rebranding of the hotel, she was responsible for overall decision making from the start of the project to its completion.
As an advocate of sustainability and eco-tourism, she has been able to combine these two passions with her role of executive director at the Royal Mulu Resort. Located in the Gunung Mulu National Park, is a fine example of best practice in conservation management. Raziah Mahmud Geneid has helped to promote the resort and tourism throughout the region in order to help establish the park as one of the leading destinations for eco-tourism in South East Asia.
Awards, Honors and Other Activities
Throughout her professional career, Raziah Mahmud Geneid has won numerous awards and honors. In 2004 she was awarded the Innovative Women Entrepreneur of the Year in Construction & Property of Malaysia.
In recognition of her work as Poland’s honorary consul in Sarawak, she was also awarded the The Knights Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. Raziah also a makes annual donations to the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society.
